The novel opens when Astrid is twelve. Star has a boyfriend named Ray, and Astrid falls in love with him. Ingred makes it very clear that she will not allow herself to get close to a man.

Astrid, 13, has an affair with the something Ray. He tried forcing his way in her house, and she stabbed him in the hand.

All of a sudden, her rules start diminishing. She broke in and placed white oleanders in his milk, oyster sauce and cottage cheese, and one in his toothpaste. She invited him in. Astrid must learn how to survive in this new environment, according to the laws set in each home.

Astrid is immediately removed and placed in a second home, the home of Ed and Marble Turlock. During this time, she latches on to the few people who bother to care about her, but with each heartbreak and each physical trauma, Astrid learns to become more and more independent.

Ingred is eventually placed in jail, leaving Astrid to jump from foster home to foster home. When she opened the door a knife in her handhe had a bottle of wine, and bag of something that smelled good.

She has been raised by her single mother Ingrid, a very self-centered poet, who works at forming her daughter with the same care and detachment she uses in forming her poetry. She calmly stated that Barry is angry with her. Through all this, Astrid attempts to figure out who she is and where she came from.

She is a very brilliant, beautiful poet, who is adored by a man named Barry Kolker. Her first foster home is with a mother named Star. One time, there was a knock at her door, and it was Barry. There is no doubt that Astrid is a very likable and precocious girl.

It is either because her childhood is so complex, or, more likely, evidence of poor writing, that the main character is very hard to understand. She was forced to clean and baby-sit, and was never shown any affection, and was never introduced to anyone. He tried to go to her house and make her stop the nonsense.

Since the reader can never understand the narrator, the true nature of the other characters and the actions recounted by her can only be guessed.
